Synopsis
Stanislaw Brunstein was born in Poland and trained at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts and l'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. His naive style particularly suited the subject matter of the shtetl. Escaping Poland for Russia in 1939 he was imprisoned by Stalin's police. Brunstein was released to join the Polish army, coming to Britain in 1946 to work as a stage designer in the the Yiddish theatre. From 1962 until his death in 1994 his paintings were mainly images of the lost world of Jewish Poland. Accompanying the paintings are essays by Rafael Scharf, Ross Bradshaw and Dow Marmur.
